How Cool Is TXP?

Via Peter : 27 Oct 07 : ,

I've used the word "cool" a lot on TXPQ because it means something very positive and is used a lot by younger people. But Els said something on the forum that made me realise I didn't really know what the word meant and perhaps I was using it in the wrong context. So I've searched and found more about its real meaning:

  1. Excellent, great, top class etc
  2. Fashionably attractive or impressive

There are many great-looking sites built with TXP. How cool does that make TXP? I got those from the dictionary but also discovered that you can be cool at any age (it is not an exclusively young thing) and in fact older people can be really cool because they know a lot whereas young people often just think they know. But cool is also a matter of opinion - some may think Mick Jagger is still cool whereas I would say he passed it years ago (but fashion doesn't interest me so I am open to being persuaded otherwise).

So how cool is Textpattern? I think it is excellently elegant, simple, practical and stable. But fashion-wise I don't really know. IMHO, there are many great-looking sites built with TXP, such as those of Sam Brown, but does that make TXP cool? There are surely some TXP users who love trends and styles who can answer this question, so please leave a comment and enlighten me/us! How cool is TXP?

Ok I should have looked it up before I made my comments based on a feeling I have regarding the word cool… But my Dutch-English dictionary is from 1933 (no, I’m not that old! I inherited it) and also my Oxford from 1975 doesn’t know the current meaning of the word ;)

Meaning #1: of course I totally agree that TXP is all of that and more!
Meaning #2: there I’ve got my doubts; first: trends and fashion don’t mean much to me and second: I don’t think that TXP is earning it’s merits by being trendy and fashionable. Or hot. Hmm… funny that cool and hot seem to express more or less the same thing :)
With trends and fashion you never know how long it will take before everyone gets bored and you’ll never hear from it again; the fact that TXP is not primarily being used by young bloggers, but also and probably even mostly by professional site builders who are creating wonderful sites for all kinds of very serious businesses with it, gives me in fact a quite opposite impression.

Oh well, considering that English is not my first language I’ll shut up about the use of just one word that I probably didn’t interpret very well in the first place ;)

My feeling about ‘cool’ is the same as yours, Els. I hear young people using it indiscriminately in all sorts of contexts along with every other word being a swear word. So it is a word I rarely use in daily speech.

All words can be very expressive if used at the right time in the right place and I think ‘cool’ is greatly overused. But when trying to communicate with younger people perhaps it can be of value – at least that’s my thinking so far when using it on TXPQ.

I completely agree regarding fashion and trends but I think Textpattern can be like a leather jacket or mini skirt – perhaps details will change but the essence will never go out of style because it is simple, adaptable, practical etc.

TXP is not primarily being used by young bloggers

Mmm… you may be right although a lot of templates and sites on Let’s See Yours are for a young audience which is maybe why my impression is a bit different. I wonder what young trendsetters think?
